DALLAS Oct. 14, 2005 The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the nation’s largest private funding source for breast cancer research and community outreach programs, launched a grassroots advocacy campaign supporting the Nurse Reinvestment Act and other nursing workforce programs. This effort coincides with National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
“We face a dire shortage of qualified oncology nurses. We must take immediate action to educate and train nurses to meet the increasing need, or we will face nothing short of a crisis,” said Diane Balma, director of public policy for the Komen Foundation. “That’s why the Komen Foundation is urging the public to mark National Breast Cancer Awareness Month by speaking out about this critical issue at www.ActNowEndBreastCancer.org.”
According to the Oncology Nursing Society, this shortfall will worsen as they expect the number of cancer patients to increase significantly over the next 15 years. At the same time, the number of qualified nurses is projected to drop sharply. Yet, thousands of qualified would-be nurses are being turned away due to inadequate resources and a lack of faculty available to train the next generation of nurses.
Oncology nurses are important caregivers who not only administer life-saving chemotherapy and supportive care drugs, but also educate patients and help them cope with the physical and emotional toll of a cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy.
“As a breast cancer survivor who was treated with rigorous chemotherapy, I can tell you firsthand that oncology nurses play a vital role in delivering quality care to cancer patients,” added Balma. “As patients, we depend on oncology nurses, and they deliver!”
Those concerned with this issue can join the campaign by visiting www.ActNowEndBreastCancer.org - America’s town hall on breast cancer. The Web site is a virtual advocacy forum that offers every American the opportunity to influence the federal government on crucial breast cancer issues.
