Beware of a favorable prognosis: by Richard & Annette Bloch

What an odd title! All we have heard from day one is to think positive. Make
up your mind that you are going to beat this. And now we are suggesting that
you use caution when a physician says, you're cured. Those are words that
we have all dreamed about hearing. Now that you have finally heard them, we
urge you to use caution and good judgment.

In no way are we suggesting that it is not true. But you are urged to
question the source. To weigh the pros and cons. To make certain that you are
not giving up something that can not be recaptured at a later time. To make
certain that you are truly cured.

No one ever wants to question a favorable prognosis. When a doctor says we're
cured and don't need any more treatments, we want to celebrate. But be
positive that we are not throwing our future away for a moment of glee.

The most common occurrence I have seen is a lady at our second opinion panel
with back and hip pains who had been told by her surgeon two years before
that he got it all out and her breast cancer was cured and she needed no
other treatments. What percent of people do you suppose would question a
statement like that?

But she should have gone directly to a board certified medical oncologist
strictly to verify that she needed no additional treatments. Think of what
the peace of mind would be worth. Had she been treated with adjuvent
chemotherapy at that time, which should not seriously affect her life style,
she, in all probability, had a very curable disease. Now, with recurrent
breast cancer, theoretically she has an incurable but very treatable disease.

The number of cases of lung cancer or colon cancer that I personally know of
that had no treatments after surgery and then succumbed to their disease is
great. I am not saying that they all could have been cured, but certainly a
substantial share could have been. And what did it take? A little skepticism
of that favorable prognosis that everyone dreams about hearing.

If you prefer you can get a multidisciplinary second opinion from any of the
institutions listed on the web site at blochcancer.org. Many are free and there is an institution near you. There is no downside risk and you may be
saving your life as well as gaining peace of mind.
